Good day, let's digress a bit today and discuss something in the world of science... However, our niche still remain stories, lifestyle, experiences and motivation.
INFECTIOUS
MONONUCLEOSIS is also known as glandular
fever, Pfeiffer’s disease. It was first made known in 1920, by Sprunt and
Evans in the Bulletin of John Hopkins Hospital.
Then,
it was described as mononuclear leukocytosis, being that EBV had yet to be
described as the causative organism.
Infectious
mononucleosis is caused by Epstein Barr Virus (EBV). EBV is one of the member of
the family HERPES VIRIDAE. Morphologically, all herpes virus consist of an icosahedral
capsid. Infectious mononucleosis, otherwise called KISSING DISEASE. It
incubation period is within 1-2 months.
CAUSES
The
virus is associated with oropharyngeal secretions. Infectious mononucleosis is
colloquially called kissing disease because it can be transmitted through
kissing. EBV can also be transmitted through semen during sexual intercourse;
it can also be transmitted by saliva through sharing of drinks and food,
sharing of cups, eating utensils and tooth brushes. Also, it can be spread
through blood transfusion and organs transplantation.
SYMPTOMS
Infectious
mononucleosis can either be symptomatic or asymptomatic. It can be manifested
by the enlargement of lymph nodes and spleen. Perhaps it’s symptomatic, it symptoms include
sore throat and fatigue, Nausea and anorexia, cough, ocular muscle pain, chest
pain and photophobia. Fever is usually present but relatively uncommon.
****DIAGNOSIS****
According
to Prescott’s, diagnosis of mononucleosis is usually confirmed by demonstration
of an increase in circulating mononuclear cells along with a serological test
for non-specific (Heterophil) antibodies; specific viral antibodies, or
identification of viral nucleic acid. In other words it’s diagnosed by confirming
the presence of heterophil antibodies in the serum of the patient.
****TREATMENT****
Generally
speaking there is no antibiotics against any viral disease; but it can be
prevented through immunization. There is no any specific vaccine against
Epstein Barr Virus. However, it can be prevented by practicing personal
hygiene. Moreover, avoid kissing, avoid sharing drinks and personal belongings
such as toothbrushes with infected persons. Perhaps, infected, drinking plenty
of water and having lots of rest can be helpful.
****NOTE****
My
advice to you, stay glue to your partners.
And
stop playing away game. You either lose or draw in ‘away’ game. But when you
are at home, you always have ‘home advantage. If at all you must kiss, let it
be only your wife or husband. Please never double kiss.. Remember KISSING DISEASE.
Till we meet again, I remain my humble self, AKERELE Odunayo Samuel.
Remember, keep being you and keep being good.
