YOU TOO CAN BE BIASED

'My mother is the best mum in the world.' Are you conversant with this saying? I'm sure you do. I once disprove it, and you hear them saying I'm not talking about everybody but to me, my mother is the best in the whole world. This statement is biased. You see that point you pass judgment concerning a matter from your own point of view, you are biased.

Like I said earlier the writers of the best mum in the world write based on who they think is the best mum in the world. Even though, she might not be the best. But as far as they are concerned she is the best. This is a biased judgment.

You too can be biased.

Am I trying to point an accusing finger at people for being biased? No, but I'm directing my article to those who believe that they are not biased.

People cook up stories just to favor their course because of their interest. They will go to any length to prove this, not because of anything but their interest. If there is anything humans do or choose to do, all stem from interest.

Interest I say, most times this interest is selfish ones because humans by default are selfish. We all can be biased because we want to favor or promote the cause of our heritage. Today, if you ask northerners who are the people responsible for the problem of Nigeria, it's either they say it is the east or the west. Are they wrong? No, because if you ask anybody from either east or the west they would as well not admit their region is the cause of our problem. This is because humans are biased, and they know how to cook up stories to defend their biased assertion.

This is not a political write up though.
Often times I see people pointing accusing fingers at others that they are biased. I had done that before too, but I have come to the realization that we as humans are all biased. We all do things that will favor our course, it's only God that is not biased. But as for humans, we are not only biased but partial.

You too can be biased, your father can be biased because of selfish interest.
You too can be biased the moment you view matters through the prism of self.

Bias creates diverse stories; diverse stories is the reason for confusion. But my mother told me;  you think your mother cannot be biased? If you ever think so, you are wrong. Your mother too can fabricate a story because of her self esteem.  Self-esteem is another cause of partiality. If the real story will in any way bring down your self-esteem, you fashion one that robs or romance your ego.

I once read a book about what transpired in the first republic in Nigeria. The author disproves some stories that the earlier narrator had penned. I saw another book from another author chronicle the same event. But I realized the two authors didn't agree with each other in their narratives.

When this one said 'A', the other one would say 'Z'. This is another indication that men are biased. Does this mean all the events in the first republic didn't take place? No, But the narrators are biased. You too can be biased by taking the side that one of the two authors is actually saying the truth and the other is lying.

No one is a saint when it comes to being biased.

So next time before you jump into taking a side, consider all the stories, look for the point of intersection, and connect the dots. It's then you can jump to take a side. But how many people can go through this rigor before taking a side? Only a few, because concerning any issue we as humans always have preconceived notions.

I have come to the point I know that I too can be biased.

Till we meet again keep being good and real.

MY LOCAL FRIEND

We started this series last week when we talked about ‘lessons from a game of football.’ The capsule overview of last week post is the fact that in a game of football they have a common goal, which is to win. And we established that if at all victory would be their friend then there is a need for them to work as a team. Here is a personal experience shared by a very good friend of mine: I have many friends both in my town and neighboring town. Some of them are educated while some are not. There was a time I went for a conference outside my town. I met new friends at the conference whose exposure transcend some of my friends at home. I needed to get their contacts but both my subscriber identity module (SIM) and phone storage were completely full. A thought cropped up in my mind to delete two of those my friends’ contact. I wanted to delete two numbers, a guy number who was a drop out of secondary school and one ot

IT MATTER

IT MATTER! The topic to be discussed today is ‘it matter’, but the question is, what matters? Join me as we look into this deeply.  When I was in secondary school my Agricultural science teacher taught us then GERMINATION and the factor responsible for growth. Some of the factors are: viable seeds, moisture or water, nutrient (soil) and air (oxygen) When I meditatively considered these factors I realized that not even one out of them is un-important. If any of them isn’t available then the seed growth or germination is in jeopardy. Applying this into our lives’ journey as humans, it is evident that some factors also responsible for our own growth in every endeavors of life. Some take this serious while some others don’t.  When I say growth I do not mean increase in the number of age. Neither do I mean increase in stature. We grow in business, career, and ministry and so on. For us to grow in life we need to take these factors seriously. For instance the viability of th

SEEDS

I remember when I started teaching as a side hustle. I didn't really take it serious. The first student I encountered,  just walk up to me for asistance, and I taught him at no cost. The last time I met him, he is already a graduate. After I graduated from the university I taught in one, two, three or four places. But those seeds I sowed then jokingly have become trees, I mean  big trees. Just last month I met two of my students in one of the reputable university in Nigeria; one is studying Chemical engineer and the other Computer science. Those were the one I taught between 2017 and 2018. Some of the students I taught between 2015 and 2016 had graduated from universities while some are in their final year. Some of my students are still in secondary schools and they are doing fine. I have students that are not in school but follow their passion either as singers, comedian, etc. and they are as well doing fine. Why am I telling you this? Is it for show, or perhaps to
